El Chocón hydroelectric dam on the Limay River

El Chocón

About 75 km from Neuquén Capital along Ruta Nacional 237, El Chocón is known for its hydroelectric dam on the Limay River and for Lake Ezequiel Ramos Mexía. It is also one of the most important palaeontological sites in the world: the remains of Giganotosaurus carolinii, one of the largest known carnivorous dinosaurs, were found here.

It works well as a day trip: the dam, the lake and the municipal palaeontological museum.

Villa Pehuenia

About 300 km from Neuquén Capital, on the shore of Lake Aluminé, Villa Pehuenia is surrounded by forests of araucaria trees —the pehuén, a sacred tree for the Mapuche people that gives the place its name—, close to the Batea Mahuida volcano.

Given the distance, it is best planned as a weekend trip or longer.

Andacollo

About 440 km from Neuquén Capital, near the border with Chile, Andacollo is a town with a mining tradition in the north-west of the province, in the Neuquén River valley, and the gateway to the Domuyo volcano area.

It is a long drive: it is best added to a multi-day tour of northern Neuquén.
